A software developer who used artificial intelligence to recreate applications from Adobe’s Creative Cloud suite is now taking on Microsoft Office. Brandon Thomas, an experienced software engineer, has expanded his ArtCraft project to include free, open-source alternatives to Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

The project highlights how AI-assisted software development is making it easier for individual developers to build applications that once required large engineering teams and substantial financial investment.

Meet WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft

Thomas has introduced three applications designed to replicate the core functions of Microsoft’s popular productivity tools.

WordCraft is the alternative to Microsoft Word, GridCraft is designed to perform spreadsheet tasks similar to Excel, and DeckCraft aims to reproduce PowerPoint’s presentation capabilities.

The applications build on Thomas’s earlier ArtCraft project, which includes alternatives to Adobe software such as Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, Lightroom and After Effects.

The tools are being developed using Rust, a programming language known for performance and memory safety, with substantial assistance from Anthropic’s Claude AI models. The project aims to provide familiar interfaces and useful functionality without requiring users to pay the subscription fees associated with established commercial products.

How AI Helped Build the Software

Thomas used AI-assisted coding to accelerate the development process. Instead of writing every component manually, he used AI models to help generate code, implement features and reproduce familiar software workflows.

This approach, often described as vibe coding, allows developers to describe desired functionality in natural language and use AI to generate or modify the underlying code.

However, Thomas is not simply a non-technical user prompting an AI chatbot. He has professional software development experience and can evaluate, refine and troubleshoot the generated code.

The project demonstrates how AI can increase an individual developer’s productivity, although it does not eliminate the need for testing, debugging, security reviews and ongoing maintenance.

Why the Project Is Attracting Attention

Subscription pricing has become a contentious issue for users of creative and productivity software. Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft 365 offer extensive capabilities, but recurring fees can be expensive for students, freelancers, small businesses and occasional users.

Free alternatives could give these users another option, particularly if they need basic document editing, spreadsheets, presentations or creative tools.

Supporters see ArtCraft as a challenge to subscription-dependent software businesses. Critics, however, question whether one developer can maintain such a broad collection of applications and keep them compatible with evolving file formats and operating systems.

Can These Apps Replace Microsoft Office?

Not yet. Reproducing the appearance of Word, Excel and PowerPoint is only one part of building reliable alternatives.

Professional users depend on advanced spreadsheet formulas, macros, document formatting, presentation animations, accessibility features and compatibility with existing Microsoft Office files. Businesses also require collaboration tools, dependable updates, privacy safeguards and technical support.

The ArtCraft applications are still at an early stage, and independent testing has not established that they can match Microsoft’s products across these areas. Users should test the software with copies of their own files before relying on it for important work.

Security is another consideration. Open-source code can be inspected by the community, but availability of the source code alone does not guarantee that an application is safe.

What This Means for the Software Industry

ArtCraft reflects a broader shift in software development. AI tools are lowering the barriers to building complex applications, potentially increasing competition and encouraging established companies to reconsider pricing and product strategies.

However, generating code quickly is different from delivering a mature product. Long-term success will depend on reliability, compatibility, security, user feedback and the ability to sustain development.

Summary

Software engineer Brandon Thomas has expanded his ArtCraft project from Adobe-style creative applications to free, open-source alternatives to Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Developed with assistance from Anthropic’s Claude AI, the tools aim to challenge subscription-based software. However, they remain early-stage products, and questions about security, reliability, file compatibility and long-term maintenance remain before they can replace established commercial applications.
