India’s nationwide shift to E20 petrol is facing renewed scrutiny after a survey found that more than half of owners of older vehicles have experienced a noticeable drop in fuel efficiency since switching to the ethanol-blended fuel. The findings have intensified the debate around the impact of E20 petrol on vehicles that were not originally designed to run on higher ethanol blends.

E20 Fuel Leads To 56% Drop In Mileage - Survey

The survey, highlighted by automotive platform Team-BHP and reported by The Lallantop, found that 56 percent of respondents driving older vehicles reported a decline in mileage after using E20 fuel.

What Is E20 Fuel?

E20 fuel is a blend consisting of 20 percent ethanol and 80 percent petrol. The Indian government has promoted ethanol blending to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, lower carbon emissions, and support domestic agriculture through increased demand for ethanol production.

The nationwide rollout of E20 has accelerated over the past two years, with the government already laying the groundwork for even higher ethanol blends in the future.

Older Vehicle Owners Report Mileage Concerns

According to the survey, 56 percent of owners of older vehicles reported reduced fuel efficiency after switching to E20 petrol. Many respondents claimed they were getting fewer kilometres per litre compared to conventional petrol blends previously available in the market.

Some vehicle owners have also reported sluggish acceleration, changes in engine performance, and increased fuel consumption, particularly in vehicles manufactured before E20 compatibility became common.

The findings add to growing consumer concerns about the impact of mandatory E20 adoption on India’s large fleet of older petrol-powered vehicles.

What Do Automakers And Experts Say?

Automobile manufacturers and industry bodies acknowledge that E20 fuel can lead to some reduction in mileage because ethanol contains less energy per litre than conventional petrol.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has stated that scientific testing shows fuel efficiency may decline by around 2-4 percent under controlled conditions, although real-world results can vary depending on driving habits, vehicle maintenance, and engine condition.

Mahindra & Mahindra executives have also acknowledged that some vehicles may experience reduced mileage and acceleration when running on E20 fuel.

Government Continues To Push Ethanol Blending

Despite consumer concerns, the government remains committed to expanding ethanol blending as part of its energy security and sustainability strategy. Officials argue that the long-term benefits include lower crude oil imports, reduced emissions, and stronger support for India’s agricultural sector.

The government has already notified standards for fuel blends beyond E20, including E22, E25, E27, and E30, signalling plans for higher ethanol adoption in the future.

Debate Likely To Continue

As E20 becomes the standard fuel across the country, questions about vehicle compatibility, mileage loss, and long-term maintenance costs are unlikely to disappear. While industry studies suggest modest efficiency reductions, many motorists continue to report a larger impact in everyday driving conditions.

The challenge for policymakers will be balancing environmental and energy-security goals with consumer concerns as India moves towards an increasingly ethanol-powered future.

Summary:

A survey has found that 56 percent of owners of older vehicles experienced a drop in mileage after switching to E20 petrol. While automakers say scientific tests show fuel efficiency losses of around 2-4 percent, many motorists report a larger impact in real-world conditions. The findings have renewed debate over vehicle compatibility as India continues expanding its ethanol-blending programme.
