According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the company is creating AI agents that can do a variety of tasks that are currently handled by junior engineers.

ChatGPT Will Launch AI Agents Who Can Replace Junior Engineers

Concerns regarding the effects of generative AI (GenAI) on employment are raised by this development, especially in India’s IT services industry, which employs thousands of engineers yearly.

Open AI Creating AI Agents: CEO Sam Altman

As coding becomes more automated, executives from technology and IT services companies recognize that AI will transform job roles. To manage AI models and boost productivity, they think human oversight will still be necessary.

Altman outlined a future artificial intelligence (AI) agent for software engineering that, with certain restrictions, could manage tasks comparable to those carried out by engineers with a few years of experience. He stated, “It will not have the biggest new ideas, it will require lots of human supervision and direction, and it will be great at some things but surprisingly bad at others.”

According to his remarks, automation may reduce the need for junior engineers in the future.

Indian IT Companies Report Decrease in Headcount

Numerous Indian IT companies have reported a decrease in headcount in recent quarters, in part because of waning demand and in part because automation is making it unnecessary to hire at previous levels.

Using Google’s Gemini tool, Cognizant recently disclosed that 20% of its code is now generated by AI.

According to HSBC, AI-driven automation could reduce the cost of 20–25% of IT services, which could result in a 4-5% drop in total IT services spending over the next three to four years.

AI agents will be adopted gradually, according to Catalincs partner Ramkumar Ramamoorthy, contingent on industry readiness. “Students will need to be trained in higher skill sets that require them to work side by side with agents. But for that, we need to reimagine the STEM curriculum and syllabi.”

ChatGPT’s New Tool Can Think & Work Like ‘Research Analyst’

OpenAI has launched a new ChatGPT tool called “deep research,” aimed at transforming research tasks. This tool can quickly analyze and synthesize hundreds of online sources to produce comprehensive reports in just minutes, a process that would typically take humans hours. Users need only provide a prompt, and ChatGPT will independently conduct research, analyze data, and compile a professional-level report.
