OpenAI has officially entered the browser wars with Atlas, a next-generation, AI-powered browser aimed at transforming how users navigate the web. Built on ChatGPT’s intelligence, Atlas offers an interactive browsing experience that merges productivity, personalization, and automation — directly challenging Google Chrome and Perplexity’s Comet.

ChatGPT Makers Launch A New Browser Called Atlas, Powered By AI

Three Core Features: Chat, Memory, and Agent

Atlas introduces three groundbreaking features that set it apart:

  • Chat: Users can summon ChatGPT on any website to draft emails, summarize pages, compare products, or analyze data in real time. The chatbot remains contextually aware, acting as a personal assistant throughout the browsing experience.
  • Memory: This feature allows Atlas to remember past conversations and browsing sessions, creating a deeply personalized experience. Users can ask context-based questions like “Summarize the job listings I viewed last week” or “List all travel sites I visited for Europe plans.”
  • Agent Mode: The most powerful feature, Agent Mode enables ChatGPT to perform actions on behalf of users, such as researching, booking tickets, or planning events. However, this feature will be available only to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers.

Privacy Safeguards and Incognito Controls

Recognizing privacy concerns, OpenAI confirmed that the ChatGPT Agent only operates within browser tabs and cannot access computer files or execute code. Users can also toggle Incognito Mode to prevent memory saving or manage and delete stored data anytime through settings — ensuring transparency and control.

AI-Powered Search Experience

Unlike traditional browsers, Atlas replaces Google Search or Bing with ChatGPT Search, offering conversational responses while maintaining a familiar search layout. This integration aims to combine AI-powered insight with a search engine’s utility, bridging the gap between chatbots and browsing.

Availability and Expansion Plans

OpenAI has rolled out Atlas for Mac users starting today, with Windows and mobile versions in development. With Atlas, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT not just as an assistant but as a core layer of the modern web experience, signaling the dawn of AI-native browsing.
