Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in collaboration with the global satellite communication firm Viasat has completed the trials of its new technology called Direct-to-Device (D2D) technology which is compatible with Android and iOS smartphones as well as smartwatches and other smart devices available in the market.
Direct-to-Device Technology for Seamless Communication in Remote Areas
The idea behind the introduction of new tech is to seamless connectivity even in remote areas or during network outages.
On the back of Direct-to-Device connectivity, mobile phones, smartwatches, and even cars users can connect directly to satellite networks. As per the global satellite firm, Viasat, this technology is designed to support both personal and device communication providing reliable connectivity regardless of location and by bringing in great coverage as well as reliable communication for users, especially in remote and underserved areas.
Based on satellite communication, the Direct-to-Device service enables devices to connect directly without the need for mobile towers or wired connections. Similar to satellite phones, this new technology facilitates communication between smartphones, smartwatches, and other smart gadgets.
BSNL and Viasat Achieve Satellite Communication on Android Devices
In the trial on a commercial Android smartphone, the BSNL and Viasat successfully conducted two-way messaging and SOS messaging using Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) connectivity.
Marking another significant step toward uninterrupted communication was a trial wherein a phone call was made using a satellite located 36,000 kilometres away.
