BSNL, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, has recently seen a remarkable rise in its customer base. Between July and October 2024, the company gained 5.5 million new users through mobile number porting. This growth coincides with increased tariffs by private telecom operators such as Jio, Vodafone, and Airtel in June 2024, prompting users to switch to BSNL for its affordable plans and reliable service.
The trend marks a shift from June 2024, when BSNL recorded only 63,709 port-ins. By July, this number surged to 1.5 million and peaked at 2.1 million in August. Although the numbers dipped in subsequent months—1.1 million in September and 0.7 million in October—BSNL has demonstrated its ability to attract cost-conscious consumers.
Decline in Customer Port-Outs Strengthens BSNL’s Position
BSNL’s efforts to retain its customers are also yielding results. The number of users porting out from BSNL has declined significantly. From 0.4 million in June, the figure dropped to 0.31 million in July and reached its lowest at 0.26 million in August. Although there was a slight increase to 0.51 million in October, the overall trend indicates improved customer satisfaction and loyalty.
Broadband Challenges Amidst Mobile Growth
While BSNL is making strides in mobile services, its broadband segment faces hurdles. According to a report by TelecomTalk, BSNL’s Wi-Fi subscriber base dropped from 10,92,650 in FY 2020 to 4,06,600 by March 31, 2024. Similarly, its wireline broadband market share, though at 16.61% in September 2024, remains significantly lower than Jio’s 40.61% and Airtel’s 25.24%.
Impact of Tariff Hikes on Private Operators
BSNL’s growth comes at a time when private telecom operators are experiencing subscriber losses. TRAI data reveals that in September 2024 alone, Jio lost 7.9 million users, Vodafone Idea lost 1.5 million, and Airtel lost 1.4 million. This mass migration underscores the impact of tariff hikes on consumer behavior.
Looking Ahead
As BSNL navigates a competitive telecom market, its ability to offer affordable, quality services is proving crucial. With continued focus on innovation and customer retention, BSNL is well-positioned to expand its market share and enhance its reputation as a reliable telecom provider.
