Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2023 is set to begin on June 5 where CEO Tim Cook will deliver his keynote speech to kick things off.
The event
The event will end on June 9.
Same as last year, Apple WWDC will be an online event.
However, select developers and students along with some media professionals have been invited to Apple Park for an in-person event.
A huge highlight of this year’s event will be Apple’s mixed reality headset which will likely be unveiled at the event.
Leaks
The device is expected to be named ‘Reality Pro’.
Leaks about the specs have already come out.
Reliable Apple tipster Ross Young has shared alleged specifications of the two displays rumored to be placed inside Apple’s rumored virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) headset.
Display
He tweeted that Apple AR/VR headset will feature dual 1.41-inch micro OLED displays with 4,000 PPI index and more than 5,000 nits of brightness.
If these display specs turn out to be true they will be more than what any other VR headsets in the market will feature.
For example, the PSVR2 has 2000 ppi whereas Meta Quest Pro offers 1800×1920 ppi.
Processor
It could be powered by a chipset with a processor similar to Apple’s M2 chipset.
Camera
Coming to camera setup it could sport a dozen or so lenses to detect body movements and read facial expressions.
The headset is expected to come with a control knob to switch between virtual reality and augmented reality.
Access to Apple services
According to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, the headset will likely run any iPad app out-of-the-box.
It will also have access to apple services like TV+ and Fitness as well as the existing App Store library.
Availability
It will not be a mass-market product.
Reports suggest that shipments of the device in 2023 are expected to be a tiny fraction of Apple’s other products.
Pricing
Price wise the device is likely to be seven times as expensive as Meta Platforms Inc. ‘s Quest 2, the biggest selling VR headset currently with 18 million units to date.
Apple AR/VR headset is said to be priced at around $3,000 ( ₹2.48 lakh).
The price tag may be alarming to those looking to use it for casual gaming sessions.
However the target audience of the headset may not be gamers but rather developers who will use it to build apps and tools in AR and VR to create Apple’s new ecosystem.
The price is also justified by the wide range of high end AR/VR features Apple is expected to add.
