Amazon is reportedly in talks to acquire artificial intelligence startup Decart in a deal that could be valued at around $7 billion. The potential acquisition would strengthen Amazon’s position in the AI infrastructure market, particularly as technology companies look for ways to reduce their dependence on Nvidia’s dominant AI chips.

If completed, the deal would rank among Amazon’s largest acquisitions in recent years. However, discussions are ongoing, and there is no guarantee that an agreement will be reached.

What Does Decart Do?

Founded in 2023 by Israeli engineers Dean Leitersdorf, Orian Leitersdorf and Moshe Shalev, Decart develops software that helps AI models run across different types of processors.

Its technology allows developers to switch between AI chips more easily, reducing the engineering effort required to move workloads from one hardware platform to another. This capability is becoming increasingly important as companies seek alternatives to Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs).

Decart also develops AI models for applications beyond conventional text generation. Its Lucy model can edit video in real time, while Oasis generates interactive virtual environments that can be used to train and test robotics and autonomous-driving systems.

Why Amazon Wants Decart

Amazon has been investing heavily in its own AI chips through Amazon Web Services (AWS). Its Trainium processors are designed to compete with Nvidia hardware in the market for AI training and inference.

However, developers often build AI applications around Nvidia’s software ecosystem, making it difficult to migrate workloads to competing chips.

Decart’s technology could help address this challenge by making it easier for developers to run AI applications on Amazon’s custom processors without extensive changes to their existing systems.

AWS reportedly gave Decart early access to its Trainium3 chip in 2025. The two companies subsequently worked together to move Decart’s AI workloads onto the platform.

Acquiring Decart could give Amazon direct access to its technology and engineering talent, potentially making Trainium more attractive to AI developers and enterprise customers.

Decart’s Valuation and Funding

Decart was valued at nearly $4 billion in May 2026, according to reported investment data. The company has attracted funding from investors including Sequoia Capital, Benchmark and Radical Ventures, with Nvidia also participating in its funding round.

The reported $7 billion acquisition valuation would represent a substantial increase over that earlier valuation.

The proposed price also reflects the strategic importance of software that helps companies use AI computing resources more efficiently. As demand for computing power increases, improving chip utilisation and reducing operating costs have become major priorities for cloud providers.

Anthropic Previously Explored a Deal

Amazon is not the only major AI company to have considered acquiring Decart. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, reportedly explored a potential acquisition valued at around $6 billion earlier in 2026.

However, Anthropic decided not to proceed after conducting due diligence, according to previous reports.

Amazon’s interest highlights the growing competition among AI companies and cloud providers to secure technologies that could improve computing efficiency and strengthen their infrastructure businesses.

What Happens Next?

The reported negotiations remain subject to change. Amazon and Decart have not publicly confirmed a completed acquisition, and the discussions could still collapse or attract interest from another potential buyer.

If the transaction proceeds, it could give Amazon a stronger software advantage in its effort to expand the use of Trainium chips and compete more effectively in the AI computing market.

Summary

Amazon is reportedly negotiating to acquire AI startup Decart for around $7 billion. Decart develops software that helps AI models run across different chips, alongside video and virtual-world generation models. The acquisition could strengthen Amazon Web Services’ Trainium chip business by making it easier for developers to move workloads away from Nvidia hardware. The deal remains unconfirmed, with negotiations still underway.
