Amazon said customers in India can use their 2,000 rupee notes and get it credited to their Amazon Pay balances.
It will start offering a doorstep solution to ease the stress of exchanging such currency.
“Don’t stress if stores are refusing to accept Rs 2,000 notes for payments. You can hand them over to an Amazon delivery agent during your next cash-on-delivery order,” Amazon said.
The move is meant to help people who had been struggling to exchange the notes for smaller denominations.
Pulling out of circulation
As per the RBI, the Rs 2,000 note is being taken out of circulation.
The central bank has asked people to exchange or deposit the Rs 2,000 note in banks by September 30.
The Rs 2000 note continues to be a legal tender. This means that one can use the Rs 2000 note for buying goods and services, in everyday life transactions etc.
How it works
Amazon Inc said that with its ‘cash load at doorstep’ service, KYCed customers can hand over additional cash or leftover change to the delivery agent to load the same to their Amazon Pay balance during a cash-on-delivery order.
In order to avail the facility, customers have to complete video KYC on the Amazon app, which takes about 5-10 minutes.
“The facility to top up your Amazon Pay balance with cash handed to delivery agents at your doorstep is one of our unique services in India available to full KYCed customers.”
Up to Rs 50,000 per month, including Rs 2,000 denomination can be deposited in the Amazon Pay accounts.
Once the process of KYC is completed, customers can hand over the currency notes to their delivery agents after they place a cash-on-delivery order.
The updated balance will start reflecting in the customer’s Amazon Pay balance shortly after, the company said.
“Staying true to our mission, we will continue to provide holistic experiences to our customers by facilitating such simplified solutions and further catalyse the digital payments revolution in India,” Vikas Bansal, Whole-time Director, Amazon Pay India, said.
