Senior First Officers To Move To Air India Express
Air India has introduced a new framework under which pilots seeking command upgrades will have to move to Air India Express, according to sources. The framework is based on a common seniority pool between the two airlines and is aimed at creating a clearer career progression pathway for pilots within the Air India Group.
Under the proposed arrangement, senior first officers from Air India who want to become commanders on narrow-body aircraft will move to Air India Express, which operates Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 family aircraft.
₹10 Lakh Bonus For Pilots Moving To Air India Express
Senior first officers transferring to Air India Express to fly Boeing 737 aircraft will receive a one-time ₹10 lakh bonus under the framework.
Existing Air India Express commanders flying these aircraft will receive ₹21 lakh over three years, according to sources.
The financial incentives are intended to make the transition more attractive while helping Air India Express strengthen its pool of experienced commanders.
Two-Year Mandatory Service At Air India Express
Once pilots become commanders, they will be required to serve at the Air India Express operating base selected for them for at least two years.
This mandatory period can be extended by another six months. After completing the required service, pilots will be allowed to choose their operating base, subject to eligibility.
The arrangement is designed to ensure that Air India Express gets a stronger pool of commanders while giving pilots a defined pathway towards career progression within the group.
Air India Has Over 3,500 Pilots
Air India currently has more than 3,500 pilots, while Air India Express has over 2,000 pilots. Together, the two airlines operate a fleet of around 300 aircraft.
Air India itself does not operate Boeing 737 aircraft, while Air India Express operates both Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 family aircraft.
The decision to move senior first officers to Air India Express is aimed particularly at increasing the number of commanders available for Boeing 737 aircraft, with a significant number of these planes expected to join the fleet next year.
Pilot Concerns Over The New Framework
While Air India is presenting the framework as a way to provide new career opportunities and long-term growth, some pilots have expressed reservations.
The transfer was communicated to pilots during a town hall meeting by Air India’s Head of Operations, Manish Uppal. Some pilots reportedly received letters on Air India Express letterhead for the proposed transfer.
One pilot alleged that they were being pressured to accept the letters because they would no longer remain on Air India’s payroll, describing the arrangement as similar to a forced resignation.
Competition For Experienced Pilots Intensifies
The framework comes at a time of intense competition among airlines for experienced pilots. Sources cited attrition, lower flying hours and aggressive hiring by competing airlines as factors behind the move.
The Air India Group is also expected to receive more narrow-body aircraft in the near term, while its wide-body fleet is expected to expand in the coming years.
The new structure is therefore intended to strengthen Air India’s internal pilot pipeline while addressing the need for more commanders at Air India Express.
