India is steadily advancing in renewable energy while aligning with national and global climate goals. As of February 2025, coal remains India’s largest electricity source, accounting for 45.74% of total installed capacity. However, renewable energy is rapidly growing, now comprising 35.65% of the total capacity. Solar power plays a crucial role, with installations surpassing 102.56 GW. Solar contributes 61.16% of India’s renewable capacity and 21.8% of the country’s total power capacity, marking a 35.71% growth over the previous year. This expansion highlights India’s commitment to clean energy solutions.

India’s Energy Growth: Balancing Renewable Expansion with Coal Dependence

India’s total installed power capacity reached 470 GW by February 2025, reflecting an 8.34% annual increase. Despite this growth in renewables, coal continues to supply nearly half of India’s electricity, posing a challenge as the country strives to balance reliable power supply with emission reductions. Ensuring grid stability remains crucial as renewable energy gains momentum.

India’s renewable expansion has also created significant employment opportunities, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions. Solar and wind projects generate jobs, improve local economies, and enhance access to electricity, promoting sustainable development. This growth strengthens India’s energy security by reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels, mitigating risks from global energy price fluctuations.

India’s Renewable Energy Growth: Advancing Solar Power Amid Challenges

Technological advancements in energy storage and grid management further enhance renewable reliability. In 2024 alone, India added over 24.5 GW of new solar capacity, reflecting the success of initiatives like the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers for Solar Modules and Cells. These policies promote quality assurance and boost domestic manufacturing, ensuring a stable solar supply chain.

Despite progress, India faces challenges in scaling renewable energy. Balancing coal and renewable power requires upgraded infrastructure and strategic planning. Financial investment, improved storage technologies, and streamlined regulations are vital for continued growth. India’s ongoing efforts, driven by both public and private sectors, are key to achieving a sustainable energy future. By successfully combining renewable growth with energy security, India is poised to become a global clean energy leader.

Summary:

India is advancing in renewable energy, with solar power driving growth. By February 2025, renewables formed 35.65% of total capacity, while coal still dominates. India’s solar capacity reached 102.56 GW, expanding job opportunities and improving energy security. Balancing renewables with coal remains crucial for stable and sustainable energy progress.
