The FASTag Annual Pass scheme is rapidly gaining popularity among Indian motorists, with its share of total toll traffic rising to 19% in June 2026, compared to around 13% six months earlier. The surge highlights growing acceptance of the subscription-based toll payment model among frequent highway users and signals a major shift in the country’s toll collection ecosystem.

Strong Growth in Annual Pass Adoption

According to recent data, total vehicle trips through toll plazas reached 44.4 crore in June. Of these, approximately 8.4 crore trips were made using FASTag Annual Passes. This marks a significant increase in adoption since the scheme’s launch, reflecting the appeal of predictable and lower travel costs for regular commuters.

The annual pass was introduced to simplify toll payments and reduce recurring expenses for private vehicle owners. The scheme has particularly attracted motorists who frequently travel on national highways and expressways.

How the FASTag Annual Pass Works

The FASTag Annual Pass is available exclusively for non-commercial vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans. Priced at ₹3,075 for the 2026-27 financial year, the pass allows up to 200 toll crossings or one year of validity, whichever comes first. This effectively reduces the cost per trip to around ₹15, making it substantially cheaper than standard toll charges.

The pass can be activated through official NHAI platforms and is linked directly to an existing FASTag account, ensuring seamless travel across eligible highways.

Impact on Toll Revenue

While motorists are benefiting from lower travel costs, the growing adoption of annual passes is affecting toll collections. Industry estimates suggest that the scheme is resulting in a monthly revenue impact of several hundred crore rupees. Despite rising vehicle traffic, toll revenue growth has remained relatively modest because a larger number of journeys are now being covered under discounted annual plans.

However, experts note that the revenue impact is partly offset by annual pass fees and increased traffic volumes. The broader objective remains improving highway efficiency, reducing congestion, and encouraging digital toll payments.

Transforming Highway Travel

The FASTag Annual Pass has emerged as one of the most successful digital transport initiatives in recent years. Earlier reports indicated that more than five million users had already subscribed to the scheme within months of its launch, demonstrating strong demand among frequent travellers.

As adoption continues to grow, the scheme is expected to make highway travel faster, more convenient, and more affordable while supporting India’s broader push toward digital infrastructure and cashless mobility.

Summary

FASTag Annual Passes now account for 19% of all toll traffic in India, up from 13% six months ago. The ₹3,075 annual plan offers up to 200 toll crossings for private vehicles and is gaining traction among frequent travellers. While the scheme impacts toll revenues, it is improving convenience, reducing travel costs, and accelerating the shift towards digital highway payments.
