About 40% of Americans will now receive a credit of $30 dollar every month by the Biden administration, according to an announcement made by the US President on Monday.

About 20 internet companies will provide discounted services to those with low incomes.

Biden Admin to Provide a Discounted Services Program

“High speed internet is not a luxury any longer. It’s a necessity,” said the US President Biden on Monday, at an event with representatives from different internet companies present, along with the members of Congress.

Biden announced that 20 internet companies will provide discounted services to people with lower incomes, as part of a program that could substantially provide free internet services to about millions of American households, through an already existing federal subsidy.

Under the infrastructure package of $1 trillion passed by Congress in 2021, a $14.2 billion funding was reserved for the Affordable Connectivity Program, as per which, a $30 monthly subsidy will be provided on internet services for millions of lower-income households.

Through this program, nearly 48 million households will be eligible to enjoy the services of the $30 monthly plan, giving 100 megabits/s, making internet service fully paid for with government assistance, stated an AP News report.

The expansion of high-speed internet access in low-income and rural areas was made a priority by POTUS Biden, during his White House run.

The 20 internet companies that have agreed charging lower rates for eligible people and families, provide services in areas where 80% of the U.S. population, including 50% of the rural population live.

“This is a case where big business stepped up. We’re trying to get others to do the same thing. It’s going to change peoples’ lives,” said Biden.

The telecom providers include Allo Communications, AltaFiber (and Hawaiian Telecom), Altice USA (Optimum and Suddenlink), Astound, AT&T, Breezeline, Comcast, Comporium, Frontier, IdeaTek, Cox Communications, Jackson Energy Authority, MediaCom, MLGC, Spectrum (Charter Communications), Starry, Verizon (Fios only), Vermont Telephone Co., Vexus Fiber and Wow! Internet, Cable, and TV.
