Byju’s Stop Firing Of 140 Employees In Kerala After Meeting With CM; Office Won’t Be Closed
The country’s biggest online-education startup Byju’s has restored the jobs of its 140 employees at the Product development centre in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram.
As per a recent development, the ed-tech giant’s Founder Byju Raveendran met with the state’s Chief Minister on continuation of the company’s operations in the capital city.
To provide you with an insight, the ed-tech unicorn had announced to shut down its product development centre in Thiruvananthapuram, which led to it laying off the 140 employees working at this centre.
This was done in line with the company’s target of slashing 5% of its existing workforce by March 2023, to lower the costs. 5% of the company’s existing employee count means firing at least 5,000 employees.
According to reports, the ed-tech company laid off the company’s employees at the Thiruvananthapuram office, who complained that they were coerced by the company’s senior management to resign and were fired without any prior hints.
They went to the Kerala Labor Minister V Sivankutty with help from the office bearers of IT employees welfare organisation Echo of Technopark and lodged complaints with the minister, asking him to get involved in the situation.
This then led to the ed-tech giant’s Founder Byju Raveendran meeting with the Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri P Vijayan.
After a detailed meeting between the two, the company announced that they have decided to continue the operations of its TVM (Thiruvananthapuram) product development centre.
This means the 140 associates of the office will be retained and continue to operate from this centre.
“Byju Raveendran, who is from Kerala, reiterates his commitment to the state and the leadership team of BYJU’S, under his guidance, will pursue a growth strategy in the state,” stated BYJU’S statement.
“At technopark, Thiruvananthapuram Employees of BYJU’S app came and met me with the office bearers of IT employees welfare organisation Echo of Technopark. Employees have many complaints, including job losses. The Labor Department will conduct a serious inspection in this matter,” said V Sivankutty.
