Apple’s Massive Green Push Via Clean Energy Charging on iOS 16.1: Everything You Need To Know
Apple has finally started to roll out a whole bunch of new features with its recent iOS 16.1 update. There are features like iCloud Shared Photo Library, third-party support for Live Activities, Apple Fitness Plus and more.
Other than this, there is a feature called as the – Clean Energy Charging feature – which apparently is not known by many.
In this story, let’s unravel and scratch beyond the surface of this feature.
What is Lean Energy Charging?
This feature will enable the iPhone users to reduce the carbon footprint by selectively charging when lower carbon-emission electricity is available.
Now what happens here is, when you enable this feature in your phone and connect it to the charger, you get a forecast which tells you about the carbon emissions in your local energy grid. This can in turn enable you to charge your iPhone during times of cleaner energy production.
As we speak today, currently this feature is only available in United States. This feature is automatically turned on by default after you update your iPhone to iOS 16.1.
You can simply turn this feature off by going in Settings, then in the Battery section, by going in the Battery Health & Charging and just turning off the Clean Energy Charging toggle.
How Does This Work?
This feature works in tandem with the Optimized Battery Charging to learn your charging habits.
It engages only at the places you spend the most of your time and regularly charge your device for long periods of time. For example, when you are at home or your place of work, it only engages you then.
Say, you are at a new location, maybe you are travelling or are visiting someone else’s place, and then this feature doesn’t engage as it detects the new location.
Hence, in order to use Clean Energy Charging, some location settings must be turned on to get the carbon-emission forecast for your area.
