Honda Can Stop Selling Jazz, WR-V, Honda City 4th Gen In India? This Is What We Know So Far..
Indian automobile sector has seen a lot of shifts with the entry of foreign players like Kia, MG etc. Also, there is unprecedented popularity among compact SUVs.
Amid all this, there is a player who is struggling with keeping with the times. It is none other than Honda. Honda, apart from the fifth-generation City and Amaze, is struggling with its outdated portfolio and lack of a potent SUV in its Indian lineup.
Due to the outdated lineup and rising competition in the auto space, the present Honda cars are failing to gain the foothold that they want.
If sources are to be believed, Honda is considering dropping offerings like Jazz hatchback, WR-V crossover and fourth-generation City.
From October 2022, Honda will stop the sales of Jazz whereas the sales of its crossover derivative, the WR-V, will come to an end after March 2023.
After December 2022, the fourth-generation City will not be sold as well. After the BS6 emission norms kicked in, these cars were revised.
While the Jazz and WR-V got mild facelifts and a couple of new features, the fourth-generation City’s lineup got restricted with only two petrol-manual variants on sale.
However, there is no official comment on this development from Honda Cars India.
If this happens, then the Indian lineup of Honda will be left with only two cars, Amaze and fifth-generation City, both of which are sedans.
Jazz Discontinuation Confirmed
The all-new generation of Jazz, which went on sale globally in 2020, will not be launched in India by Honda due cost constraints.
Also, for the WR-V has no successor planned for India. It was introduced as a crossover derivative of the currently-on-sale Jazz in India.
The fourth-generation City was already replaced by the fifth-generation version globally, which is on sale in India alongside the former as a more premium and bigger sedan.
Honda also discontinued its premium offerings like Civic and CR-V in past some years. It also shut down its manufacturing facility in Greater Noida.
There will be a sure shot vacuum in the Honda compact hatchback segment after the departure of Jazz. Generally, this is the segment that the automakers have for volumes, rather than margin. We have seen how Ford left its business in India, so this can also mark the phased exit of Honda from India.
However this contingency can be ruled out on the ground that currently the automaker is working on two new SUVs, both of which are expected to come to India as well. While the first SUV is a sub-four-meter compact SUV which might replace the WR-V in India, the other is a midsize SUV positioned alongside the fifth-generation City in India.
