2.5 Lakh Auto Drivers, Taxis Declare Indefinite Strike From This Date In Maharashtra: Find Out Why?

Auto rickshaw, taxi owners and operators in the Konkan division of Maharashtra will go on an indefinite strike from midnight of July 31, an official said.

Why?

Over 2.5 lakh auto rickshaw, taxi owners and operators will participate. 

Pranav Penkar, the president of the Kokan Vibhag Rickshaw-Taxi Mahasangh said that the Maharashtra government has ignored their long pending demands.

One of them is a hike in fares as the price of CNG has increased.

CNG Rates

Earlier this month, Mahanagar Gas announced an increase in the retail price of CNG by Rs 4/kg to Rs 80.

It attributed this rise in cost to rising input gas cost and the fall in the rupee.

The company has been sourcing gas from the overseas market to meet the shortfall in domestic supply.

Against issuing permits

Additionally, they are opposing the state government’s move of issuing a number of permits to auto rickshaws in the region.

The union is demanding a suspension of issuing new permits for at least 10 to 15 years, as it adversely affects the existing operators.
