In line with PM Narendra Modi’s aim to phase out the use of single use plastic items, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India has notified that the country will ban the manufacture and usage of identified single use plastic items, starting July 1, 2022.
Those plastic items that are used only once and then discarded are termed as single-use plastic.

Environment Ministry’s New Notification
According to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of identified single use plastic items will be banned across the country from July 1, 2022.
These items have low utility and high littering potential, and the step towards banning these items will pose as a defining step towards curbing pollution caused by littered and unmanaged plastic waste, as per a government press release.
It is not hidden that the use of single-use plastic items is hazardous to both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and their threat to marine life, among others, are recognized globally.
All the Single Use Plastic Items Banned
The detailed list of single-use plastic items that will be banned starting July 1 include:
- earbuds with plastic sticks,
- plastic sticks for balloons,
- plastic flags, candy sticks,
- ice- cream sticks,
- polystyrene or Thermocol for decoration,
- plastic plates, cups, glasses,
- cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays,
- wrapping or packaging films around sweet boxes,
- invitation cards,
- cigarette packets,
- plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron, and
- Stirrers.
Imposing a ban on plastic cups, plates, and other cutlery items made up of single-use plastics,will curb the manufacturing of these products, putting an end to the industry of Rs 10,000 size, employing 2 lakh people directly and 4.5 lakh people indirectly.
