Mercury levels have been rising all around the country along with the increasing incidents of electric scooters catching on fire which have made headlines in the past few days. Some of the prominent cases of EVs catching fire was when an Ola Electric scooter went up in flames. Also recently, a whole truck carrying more than 40 Jitendra EVS was charred to ashes due to an EV fire. And now a new and even more jarring incident has been reported from Tamil Nadu where an Okinawa dealership was seen bursting in flames. The fire had started due to an electric scooter that caught fire while parked inside the dealership. Thankfully, nobody was hurt and the fire was later put out with the help of bystanders.
It is not yet known as to how much damage has happened to the dealership due to the fire, but from the black smoke ball visible in the video, it unfortunately feels like not much of the showroom remains.
Defective batteries?
In a similar incident, many of the Pure EV dealers are now also claiming defects in batteries in the electric scooters. “There are problems with the batteries, too. A customer had dropped off a battery with us complaining about a drop in range. The battery exploded in my showroom and caught fire. Fortunately my staff was safe,” stated Vivek Ranjan who owns a dealership in Bihar’s Lalganj.
In the midst of all this, Okinawa has recalled 3,215 units of Praise Pro scooters immediately in order to properly address any battery related issues.
Why do EVs catch fire?
EVs can mainly catch fire due to three reasons – bad quality lithium cells, cell leakage internally in the battery, and mismatch between parameters of battery controller and motor (powertrain).
