According to industry estimates, only about 40,000 engineering jobs (representing 3% of 15L engineers) come from Tier 1 colleges with pay packages ranging from Rs 8-10 LPA for freshers.

What about the rest?

Because of the disparity in available employment prospects across institutions, about 12.5 lakh engineers are forced to change their careers and pursue non-technical opportunities to stay afloat every year.

There are multiple reasons and pinning down the reason for this skill gap isn’t possible in one go. One of the main reasons could be simply the absence of relevant skills that are required for emerging tech jobs compared to those possessed by college students.

Scaler Edge

Scaler (a platform by edtech company InterviewBit) has a college-companion programme called Scaler Edge – to increase the employability of engineering students – to solve the gap between skills needed for high-quality technology employment and work-readiness of graduates.

“In light of industry data that highlights the lack of skills needed for high-quality jobs among engineering graduates, we wanted to ensure that students have the best resources available to master industry-oriented skills and improve their employment opportunities. With this at the forefront of our efforts, we devised Scaler Edge. We believe that learning directly from industry experts and getting mentored by those at the forefront of tech innovation in India is essential to creating future tech leaders,”

Requirements For The Course

The curriculum is open to students from all disciplines and requires no prior knowledge of technology or coding.

The first year of the curriculum teaches computer science fundamentals, with students choosing a career track in the second year from among the five most sought-after sectors in Indian technology: data science, machine learning/AI, mobile development, full-stack development, and back-end programming.

“We believe that Covid has presented us with a once-in-a-generation opportunity to bring the highest quality of industry-ready live learning from instructors with experience at top tech companies. We are eager to work with the new batch of Scaler Edge students and look forward to learning alongside them through this programme,”

Over 600 worldwide firms, including Google, Uber, Amazon, Facebook, Flipkart, Myntra, and Dunzo, use InterviewBit for their employment needs, and over 4,000 students have been placed through the platform so far.
