Wipro is planning to invest $1 billion into artificial intelligence (AI) over the next three years.
Announcement following TCS
It will focus on the expansion of AI, big data and analytics solutions.
It is aiming to unleash an era of ‘productivity and commercial opportunities’ with the application of generative AI.
The announcement comes a week after rival Tata Consultancy Services revealed its own plans to train 25,000 engineers so that they can get certified on Microsoft’s Azure Open AI.
Worldwide trend
The two Indian firms have just hopped on the bandwagon companies across the world, from banks to big tech are already on when it comes to investments in AI.
ChatGPT, a generative AI chatbot by Microsoft-backed OpenAI initiated the momentum in late 2022.
Training workforce
Wipro will train all of its around 250,000 employees on the fundamentals and responsible use of AI using an AI-first innovation ecosystem service called Wipro ai360 over the next 12 months.
It will also provide customised and continuous training to employees in AI-focused roles.

Wipro also launched Wipro ai360, its AI-first innovation ecosystem developed with the goal of integrating AI into every platform, every tool, and every solution used internally and offered to clients.
“Wipro ai360, fueled by this new investment, will help unleash a new era of value, productivity, and commercial opportunities through the application of AI and generative AI”, the IT major said in an exchange filing.
Investment in startups
The company said it will accelerate investments in cutting-edge startups through Wipro Ventures.
It added that it will launch a GenAI seed Accelerator programme to provide select generative AI-focused startups with the necessary training to become ‘enterprise ready’.
