With the X Fold2 and X Flip, Vivo offers new and latest contenders in the foldable phone market. There are many improvements in the second generation horizontal folding phone as it brings in a reworked hinge mechanism, the latest gen Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, new cameras and 120W wired charging.
Though the company did not reveal any details concerning a global release, the X Flip is Vivo’s first attempt at a clamshell foldable and it packs a sizeable 3-inch cover display, Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset and a 50MP main camera.
X Fold2
With an 8.03-inch E6 AMOLED display with 2160 × 1916px resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, X Fold2’s panel brings a 4:3.55 aspect ratio and a new droplet-style hinge system which is lighter and more durable compared to the one used on the X Fold and X Fold+ from last year.
There is also a 6.53-inch AMOLED cover screen with 2520 × 1080px resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate and a more traditional 21:9 aspect ratio.
There are ultrasonic fingerprint scanners in both the panels and also there is a 16MP front-facing cameras housed in punch hole cut-outs. In terms of dimensions, X Fold2 is 1.5mm slimmer than its predecessor in folded form and over 30 grams lighter.
There is a triple camera on the back with a 50MP main unit IMX866V with OIS and Zeiss T* coating on the lens, a 12MP ultrawide and a 12MP 2x portrait lens that also offers up to 20x digital zoom.
Supported by vivo’s self-developed V2 image chip which touts improved HDR in stills and video and better noise reduction. X Fold2 can record up to 8K video at 30fps and features a Zeiss Cinematic mode.
The foldable boots Android 13 with OriginOS 3 on top, which features several enhancements for the large screen.
These include a taskbar for easy multitasking, a remote PC control feature and adaptable UI in certain apps when you prop the hinge at an angle. Keeping things running is a 4,800 mAh battery with 120W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.
There are two trims in which the phone comes:
• 12/256GB priced at CNY 8,999 ($1,308)
• 12/512GB version for CNY 9,999 ($1,453).
X Flip
Vivo’s first clamshell foldable phone, X Flip brings in a spacious 3-inch AMOLED cover display that can be used for just about everything from texting to maps navigation and using social media apps.
In order to optimize their apps for the cover display so as to enable users to complete the task without having to open the internal screen as what currently the company is currently working on.
There is a main screen of 6.74-inch LTPO AMOLED with FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It also features a waterdrop hinge mechanism which should deal with the infamous crease seen on most folding screens. X Flip brings a 32MP front facing cam and a side mounted fingerprint scanner.
Aided by 12GB RAM and up to 512GB storage, the phone is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset.
It features the same 50MP Sony IMX866V sensor with OIS as on the X Fold2 alongside a 12MP ultra wide module.
If one wishes, one can prop the phone flat on a table and adjust the hinge to your desired position for hands-free selfies.
One may also use the main 50MP camera for even better details. There’s a 4,400 mAh battery with 44W fast charging here and Origin OS3 based on Android 13 on the software side.
