In a major development in the long-running legal battle involving the Adani Group, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has urged a federal court to permanently dismiss criminal charges against billionaire Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and other associates. The move marks a significant reversal in a case that had attracted global attention since the charges were first filed in 2024.

DOJ Says Case Is Primarily A Foreign Matter

According to the DOJ’s latest court filing, the alleged conduct at the centre of the case took place almost entirely in India and involved Indian individuals, Indian companies, and Indian government entities. The department argued that pursuing such a case in the United States would be inconsistent with its current enforcement priorities.

The filing stated that acting as a global enforcer in matters with limited American involvement could create unnecessary diplomatic tensions and divert resources from cases directly affecting US interests. Prosecutors also noted that key evidence and witnesses are located outside the United States, making the case difficult to pursue successfully.

Charges Stemmed From 2024 Bribery Allegations

The case originated in 2024 when US authorities accused Gautam Adani and others of participating in a scheme involving alleged payments to Indian government officials in connection with solar energy projects. Prosecutors had also alleged that investors were misled regarding the company’s anti-corruption practices while raising funds from international markets.

The Adani Group consistently denied all allegations and maintained that it had acted within legal and regulatory frameworks. The company has repeatedly described the accusations as baseless.

Investment Rumours Rejected By DOJ

Recent media reports suggested that the DOJ’s decision could be linked to Adani Group’s proposed investments in the United States, reportedly worth around $10 billion. However, the department strongly rejected these claims.

In the filing, Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General R. Trent McCotter stated that the decision to seek dismissal had been reached independently and would have been made regardless of any discussion about future investments. He described suggestions of a connection between the two as inaccurate.

Judge Yet To Issue Final Order

Although the DOJ has requested that all charges be dropped with prejudice, the case has not been formally closed. US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis had earlier questioned the government’s rationale for abandoning the prosecution and demanded a more detailed explanation.

Legal experts believe judges generally have limited authority to force prosecutors to continue pursuing a case they no longer support. However, the final decision now rests with the court. If approved, the dismissal would bring an end to one of the most closely watched international corporate legal disputes involving an Indian business group.

Adani Group has welcomed the development, while investors and market observers continue to watch for the court’s final ruling.
