Government Issues First Warning To Tukaram Mundhe
Maharashtra Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has received his first warning from the state government after his remarks about Vidarbha’s popular Saoji mutton triggered criticism.
Revenue Minister and BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule, without naming Mundhe directly, warned government officials against making statements that could damage a particular business or industry. He said the Saoji business is the pride of Vidarbha and provides livelihoods to thousands of families.

Bawankule said Saoji is a unique and traditional method of preparing spices and food and has gained popularity beyond India. He noted that Saoji dishes are now in demand in many countries around the world.
The minister stressed that while action should be taken against individual food businesses if officials find adulteration or health hazards, targeting the entire Saoji industry would be wrong.
He also described the sector as more than just a restaurant business, calling it a large home industry supporting thousands of families.
Mundhe’s Comment Sparks Controversy
The controversy began after Mundhe spoke about Saoji mutton at an event and said that if he ate it, he would fall sick for a month and have to go to hospital.
His comments attracted criticism because of his position as Maharashtra’s food safety chief and came amid increased scrutiny of his department’s actions against food businesses.
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration, under Mundhe, has faced criticism in recent months, including from the Bombay High Court, over its action against businesses accused of violating food safety regulations.
Mundhe Clarifies His Remarks
Mundhe later clarified that his comment was personal and was related to his own inability to eat spicy food.
He recalled that a friend had brought Saoji mutton for him. After seeing the dish, he realised that he might not be able to eat it. He tried one bite but found it too spicy and oily and stopped eating it.
His clarification came only hours before Bawankule issued his warning to officials.
Food Safety Action Still Permitted
Bawankule made it clear that the government’s objection was not to legitimate food safety enforcement.
He said legal action can be taken against individual food outlets if officials discover adulteration or a health hazard. However, he argued that statements suggesting the entire Saoji industry could be shut down were inappropriate and could unnecessarily harm businesses and livelihoods.
The episode highlights the tension between strict food safety enforcement and protecting traditional food businesses that support large communities.
