Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, has announced that it is on track to begin mass production of its next-generation A14 semiconductor technology in the second half of 2028. The advanced manufacturing process is expected to deliver significant improvements in performance, power efficiency and transistor density, helping power the next wave of AI processors, smartphones and high-performance computing systems.

A14 to Deliver Faster and More Efficient Chips

The A14 process represents TSMC’s next major leap in semiconductor manufacturing after its 2nm technology. Compared with the upcoming N2 process, A14 is expected to offer up to 15% higher performance at the same power consumption or reduce power usage by as much as 30% while maintaining similar performance levels.

The new manufacturing technology will also improve transistor density, allowing chip designers to pack more computing power into the same silicon area.

Designed for AI and Premium Devices

TSMC expects strong demand for A14 technology from companies developing AI accelerators, high-performance computing processors and flagship smartphone chipsets.

As artificial intelligence workloads become increasingly complex, chipmakers are looking for manufacturing technologies that can deliver greater computing performance without significantly increasing power consumption. TSMC says customer interest in A14 technology is already strong.

Development Progress Exceeds Expectations

According to the company, A14 development is progressing faster than previous generations. Recent updates indicate significant improvements in both device performance and manufacturing yields, suggesting the technology is on schedule for commercial rollout in 2028.

The progress is attributed to advances in next-generation Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistor technology, which improves efficiency, scalability and chip performance.

Strengthening Leadership in Chip Manufacturing

The announcement further reinforces TSMC’s position as the global leader in advanced semiconductor manufacturing. The company continues to invest heavily in expanding production capacity while developing cutting-edge fabrication technologies to meet rising demand from artificial intelligence, data centres, smartphones and other high-performance computing applications.

The A14 process is expected to play a crucial role in enabling the next generation of AI-powered devices and advanced computing platforms.

Summary

TSMC plans to begin mass production of its advanced A14 semiconductor technology in the second half of 2028. The new process promises higher performance, lower power consumption and greater transistor density, making it ideal for AI processors, flagship smartphones and high-performance computing chips while further strengthening TSMC’s leadership in advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
