Apple is reportedly preparing a significant display upgrade for its compact iPad mini, while the next-generation entry-level iPad is expected to receive only modest internal improvements. According to recent industry reports, the OLED-equipped iPad mini could debut later this year, whereas the standard iPad will continue with its existing LCD display and familiar design.

OLED Display Finally Coming to iPad Mini

The biggest change is expected to arrive on the iPad mini, which is reportedly set to feature an OLED display for the first time. The new screen technology is expected to deliver deeper blacks, higher contrast, improved colour accuracy and better power efficiency compared to the current LCD panel.

Apart from the display upgrade, the compact tablet is also expected to receive a faster processor, while retaining its portable form factor. Industry reports suggest the launch could take place around October 2026, although Apple has not confirmed the plans.

Base iPad to Focus on Internal Upgrades

In contrast, Apple’s next entry-level iPad is expected to retain its current design and LCD display. Instead of a major redesign, the device will reportedly receive a newer processor to improve overall performance and support future software features.

The strategy would allow Apple to keep the base iPad affordable while reserving premium technologies such as OLED displays for higher-end models.

iPad Air Refresh Also in Development

Reports also suggest Apple is working on refreshed iPad Air models, with OLED technology expected to arrive on the lineup at a later stage. Updated versions of the Apple Pencil are also believed to be under development as part of the company’s broader tablet roadmap.

Apple Expands OLED Across Its Tablet Portfolio

The reported roadmap indicates that Apple is gradually transitioning more iPad models to OLED displays, following the introduction of the technology in premium models. The move is expected to enhance the viewing experience across the lineup while creating clearer differentiation between entry-level and premium tablets. However, the company has yet to officially announce these products.

Summary

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch its first OLED-equipped iPad mini later this year, bringing major improvements in display quality and performance. Meanwhile, the next entry-level iPad is expected to receive only a processor upgrade while retaining its existing LCD display and design, helping Apple maintain its budget-friendly positioning.
