2.75 Lakh Telecom Resources Removed For Spamming
According to TRAI, “Access Providers have taken stern measures against misuse of telecom resources for spamming. More than 2.75 lakh SIP DID/mobile numbers/telecom resources have been disconnected and over 50 entities have been blacklisted.”
TRAI received over 7.9 lakh complaints in the first half of 2024 over spam calls made by unregistered telemarketers.
“Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has detected a considerable surge in spam calls,” the agency said. In the first half of 2024 (January to June), over 7.9 lakh complaints were filed against unregistered telemarketers (UTMs).
Access Providers Given Severe Directives by TRAI
Access providers were given severe directives by TRAI on August 13 to immediately cease receiving promotional calls from unregistered marketers.
“Taking this issue seriously, TRAI had issued stringent directives to all Access Providers on August 13, 2024,” the organization stressed. Access Providers are required by law to quickly halt promotional voice calls made by telemarketers or unregistered senders using SIP, PRI, or other telecom resources.
If unregistered telemarketers violate these rules, they risk having their telecom resources disconnected and being placed on a blacklist for a maximum of two years.
“Any UTM found to be misusing these resources will face severe consequences, including blacklisting and disconnection of all telecom resources for up to two years,” the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said.
With this step, TRAI hopes to improve the user experience and decrease spam calls. It also encourages stakeholders to follow the guidelines for a more effective telecom system.
A consultation paper outlining changes to anti-spam regulations, including fees for calls and texts received from ten-digit numbers that over a daily cap, was published by TRAI on August 28.
