A section of the Lucknow-Kanpur Greenfield Elevated Expressway, one of Uttar Pradesh’s flagship infrastructure projects, developed surface damage just 12 days after its inauguration, raising questions over construction quality and durability. The expressway, built at an estimated cost of ₹4,200 crore, witnessed damage on the Kanpur-to-Lucknow carriageway in Unnao district after heavy rainfall.
Videos of the affected stretch quickly spread across social media, prompting widespread debate over the quality of the newly constructed highway. However, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has maintained that the issue was limited to the road’s surface layer and did not involve any structural failure.
What Exactly Happened?
The damaged portion was reported near Korari village in Unnao district, where the upper asphalt layer peeled off after continuous rainfall. Initial reports and viral videos claimed that a section of the expressway had caved in, but highway authorities later clarified that the problem was confined to the wearing coat of the road.
According to officials, around 40 metres of the surface layer experienced slippage, while the foundation and structural components of the expressway remained intact.
NHAI Clarifies It Was Not A Road Collapse
Responding to public concerns, NHAI stated that the incident should not be described as a road cave-in. Officials explained that a genuine cave-in occurs when the soil beneath the road settles, causing the entire roadway to sink.
In this case, only the top asphalt layer was affected due to technical reasons following heavy rain. Repair work was completed within a few hours, and normal traffic movement resumed on the expressway the same day.
A Landmark Highway Project
The 63-kilometre, six-lane Lucknow-Kanpur Greenfield Elevated Expressway was inaugurated on July 13, 2026, by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Designed for speeds of up to 120 kmph, the expressway has reduced travel time between Lucknow and Kanpur from nearly two hours to around 35–45 minutes. It also features India’s second-longest elevated corridor, AI-based speed enforcement systems, emergency call boxes every 2 kilometres, and integrated 24×7 traffic control centres.
Construction Quality Under Scrutiny
Although authorities have described the incident as a routine technical issue, the damage has reignited discussions on quality control in large public infrastructure projects. Experts believe newly inaugurated highways are expected to withstand seasonal rainfall without requiring immediate repairs.
The incident has led to calls for greater monitoring during construction, improved quality audits and stronger accountability to ensure long-term durability of high-value public projects.
