A new rule has been implemented as a part of road safety under which it has been made mandatory to wear a helmet while riding, failing to do which shall attract a fine a Rs. 2000. But here’s the catch, even if the rider wears a helmet, a fine can be levied if the helmet is not properly secured with its belt or if it is defective. In the latter, a fine of Rs 1000 will be imposed.
Helmet Enforcement and A Fine of Rs 2000
The fundamental objective behind the same is to promote the road safety and also reduce the road accidents by ensuring that the riders wear helmet as well as follow traffic regulations.
In order to prevent the rider and/or the pillion from potential injuries in case of accidents, such a law can turn to be instrumental.
Stricter Penalties for Overloading as per New Motor Vehicle Act
There is one more change in the new Motor Vehicle Act, wherein a penalty of Rs 20,000 shall be levied for overloading the vehicles and violating the rules. Emphasizing the importance of following the regulations, there shall be an additional fine of Rs 2000 per tonne for overloading.
As per the data provided by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India, in the year 2017, more than 48,746 two-wheeler users died in road mishaps. Out of these, 73.8% did not wear a helmet. Hence it is clear that indeed there is a correlation between 2 wheeler deaths and not wearing helmet. A rule like this can go a long way in preventing lives if implemented correctly.
