In a welcome move for millions of travellers, Indian Railways is piloting a system that prepares the reservation chart 24 hours before a train’s departure. Currently, the final chart is made just four hours prior, often leaving passengers guessing till the last minute.
This new approach, being tested in Rajasthan’s Bikaner division, could soon be implemented nationwide.

How Reservation Works Today
Indian Railways currently follows a two-step charting process:
- First chart: 4 hours before departure
- Second chart: 30 minutes before departure (for last-minute changes)
The proposed system aims to replace this with a single final chart generated 24 hours before departure.
Why This Change Matters
For passengers with waitlisted tickets, the 24-hour buffer could be a game-changer:
- More time to rebook, cancel, or explore alternatives
- Less stress and uncertainty
- Better planning for those boarding from intermediate stations
It also means smoother cancellation processes and less chaos at platforms.
Digital Push and Challenges Ahead
This change is part of Indian Railways’ digital transformation strategy. If implemented successfully, it may allow:
- Seat alerts via SMS/email
- Better berth management
- Efficient resource allocation for staff
However, questions remain:
- What if someone cancels after the chart is finalised?
- How will last-minute upgrades or bookings be handled?
- Can real-time sync work across all ticketing platforms?
Pilot Underway, Rollout Awaited
Officials are closely monitoring the pilot to identify technical gaps and passenger feedback. If proven glitch-free, the system will be expanded across zones.
While change is never easy in a network as vast as Indian Railways, this initiative could significantly improve the passenger experience—making journeys less stressful and far more predictable.
