The Ministry of Railways is set to implement a major update to its passenger reservation system starting July 1, 2025. From fare changes to new security protocols, these updates aim to improve booking efficiency, reduce misuse, and enhance passenger convenience.

1. Tatkal Bookings to Require Aadhaar OTP Verification
Aadhaar-linked mobile verification will become mandatory for all Tatkal bookings—online or at counters. Beginning July 15, passengers will also need to validate their identity through a one-time password (OTP) sent to their Aadhaar-linked phone number. This move aims to curb misuse and bulk bookings by unauthorized agents.
2. Agents Barred for First 30 Minutes of Tatkal Window
To prioritize individual travelers, authorized agents will be restricted from booking Tatkal tickets for the first 30 minutes after the quota opens each morning. This gives the general public a fairer chance at securing last-minute seats.
3. AC Waiting List Limit Raised to 60%
Responding to feedback, Indian Railways has raised the waiting list cap in air-conditioned coaches from 25% to 60% of total berth capacity. This change addresses issues of underutilization and long queues due to low availability in premium classes.
4. Non-AC Waiting List Fixed at 30%
In contrast, sleeper and second-class coaches will now have a 30% cap on waiting list tickets. This aligns capacity with demand while preventing excessive overbooking.
5. First Reservation Chart Now 8 Hours Before Departure
To offer greater transparency and help travelers plan better, the first reservation chart will now be prepared eight hours before the train departs—doubling the existing four-hour window.
6. Minor Fare Hike for Long-Distance Travel
In its first fare adjustment since 2020, Indian Railways has announced a nominal fare hike:
- ₹0.01/km increase for non-AC Mail/Express trains
- ₹0.02/km increase for AC classes
Fares for suburban routes, second class journeys under 500 km, and monthly passes remain unchanged.
What This Means for Passengers
These changes reflect a clear push towards a more secure, digitized, and equitable booking system. The government has directed all zones and booking partners to implement the changes uniformly from July 1. Passengers are advised to update their Aadhaar details and stay informed to ensure seamless travel planning.
