Navi Mumbai is preparing for one of its biggest public transport upgrades yet, with the Maharashtra government approving a new 28-kilometre integrated metro corridor that will connect key residential, commercial, and transportation hubs across the city. The project, estimated to cost ₹5,575 crore, is expected to significantly improve urban mobility while strengthening access to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The approval marks an important milestone in Navi Mumbai’s transformation into a major economic and transportation hub within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). With large-scale infrastructure projects already underway, authorities believe the metro expansion will play a critical role in supporting future growth.

What the New Metro Corridor Will Connect

The project will integrate Metro Line 1A and Metro Line 2 to create a continuous 28-km corridor stretching from Sagar Sangam to the Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Under the approved plan:

  • Metro Line 1A will connect Sagar Sangam and CBD Belapur.
  • Metro Line 2 will connect Pendhar directly to the Navi Mumbai International Airport terminal.

Together, these routes will create a seamless transit network linking major residential areas, business districts, and transportation hubs across Navi Mumbai.

13 New Stations Planned

The integrated metro expansion will add 13 new stations to the network. According to project details, two stations will be developed along Metro Line 1A, while eleven stations will be added on Metro Line 2.

These stations are expected to improve accessibility for residents living across rapidly developing nodes of Navi Mumbai, while also supporting future commercial and residential growth around transit corridors.

Around 12 Lakh Commuters Expected to Benefit

Officials estimate that nearly 12 lakh commuters will benefit from the expanded metro network once it becomes operational.

The corridor is expected to reduce travel times, improve airport connectivity, and encourage greater use of public transport. By providing a reliable alternative to private vehicles, authorities also hope to ease congestion on some of Navi Mumbai’s busiest roads and expressways.

The project is particularly important because it will connect growing residential hubs with employment centres and the new international airport, creating a more integrated transportation ecosystem.

Building on Existing Metro Infrastructure

The new expansion will build upon Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1, which is already operational between CBD Belapur and Pendhar. Developed by CIDCO, the existing line spans over 11 kilometres and includes 11 stations.

Officials say the success of the current line has strengthened the case for further expansion and demonstrated the growing demand for mass rapid transit solutions in Navi Mumbai.

Boost for Airport Connectivity and Economic Growth

One of the biggest advantages of the project will be improved access to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is expected to become one of India’s most important aviation hubs in the coming years.

Better metro connectivity could reduce dependence on road transport, improve passenger convenience, and support business activity across the region. Urban planners also expect the corridor to stimulate real estate development, commercial investments, and job creation along the route.

A New Chapter for Navi Mumbai

The integrated metro corridor represents another major step in Navi Mumbai’s infrastructure evolution. Combined with airport development, new road projects, and expanding urban infrastructure, the metro network is expected to reshape how people travel across the city.

For residents, the project promises faster, more convenient journeys. For Navi Mumbai, it could become a key catalyst for economic growth and sustainable urban development over the next decade.
