Mumbai is preparing to welcome its first new independent railway terminus in 34 years, with the long-awaited Jogeshwari Terminus now expected to open in January 2027. The project, which has faced multiple delays over the years, is being developed by Western Railway and is expected to become a major hub for long-distance train services in the city.
The new terminus is particularly significant because Mumbai has not seen the construction of a completely new independent rail terminus since the opening of Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Kurla in 1991. Since then, several stations have been upgraded to handle long-distance trains, but no entirely new terminus has been built.
Why the Project Was Delayed
According to Western Railway officials, the project was originally expected to become operational in 2026. However, major design modifications led to a delay of nearly one year.
The most significant change involved expanding the original three-platform design into a larger four-platform facility. Authorities also decided to widen platform widths from nine metres to twelve metres to improve passenger movement and reduce crowding during peak periods. These upgrades required revisions to the project blueprint and additional construction work.
A Bigger and More Modern Terminus
The revised design aims to create a more future-ready railway hub capable of handling increasing passenger volumes. The fourth platform will function as the primary home platform, while the overall station layout has been redesigned to improve operational efficiency.
Officials believe the upgraded infrastructure will provide a better passenger experience while supporting the growing demand for long-distance rail travel from Mumbai’s western suburbs.
How Mumbai’s Rail Network Will Benefit
One of the primary objectives of Jogeshwari Terminus is to reduce congestion at Mumbai’s existing long-distance railway stations. Facilities such as Mumbai Central, Bandra Terminus, Dadar, and other major hubs currently handle heavy passenger traffic and train operations.
Once operational, the new terminus is expected to accommodate additional long-distance services, helping distribute rail traffic more efficiently across the city. This could improve operational flexibility and reduce pressure on existing infrastructure.
Improved Connectivity for Western Suburbs
The location of Jogeshwari Terminus is expected to provide significant advantages for residents of Mumbai’s western suburbs. Passengers travelling from areas such as Andheri, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad, and Kandivali may no longer need to travel to distant railway terminals to board long-distance trains.
The project is also expected to integrate more effectively with Mumbai’s expanding metro network and road infrastructure, improving multimodal connectivity for commuters.
What Happens Next?
Construction work is currently progressing toward the January 2027 target. Railway authorities have indicated that the remaining work primarily involves completing upgraded station infrastructure and operational systems.
If completed on schedule, Jogeshwari Terminus will mark an important milestone in Mumbai’s railway history. Beyond adding capacity, the project represents a long-awaited expansion of the city’s long-distance rail infrastructure and could play a key role in supporting future transportation growth across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
