Yes you heard right! one of the world’s largest fast-food chains, McDonald’s will temporarily close all its offices in the US this week.
McDonald’s Plans A Fresh Round Of Layoffs
The service provider prepares to inform its corporate employees about a fresh round of layoffs, as per the media report.
In this regard, the employer sent an email to its US employees last week to start working from home from Monday to Wednesday.
It appears that McDonald’s took the decision so that it can deliver news about the layoffs virtually, the report said.
So far, it is unclear how many employees will be fired.
How Did This Happen?
The email stated, “During the week of April 3, we will communicate key decisions related to roles and staffing levels across the organization,”.
Besides this, employees have also been asked to cancel all in-person meetings scheduled this week.
Earlier, this fast-food chain said it would review corporate staffing levels as part of an updated business strategy, which could lead to layoffs in some areas and expansion in others during January.
The report suggests that the layoffs are expected to be announced by Wednesday.
In the meantime, job cuts are rising as companies are trying to counter a global economic slowdown and soaring inflation.
Technology Segment Hit By Layoffs
During this time, several tech giants such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook have drastically scaled down their operations.
It seems that Indians are among those who have been hit the hardest by the mass layoffs in US tech companies.
As an effect, hundreds of workers, living in the US on temporary visas, have been left jobless with very little time to find a new one.
Worst impact is the 1B visa holders who become unemployed can remain in the US legally for only 60 days without finding new employers to sponsor them.
McDonald’s Chief Executive Chris Kempczinski said that he anticipated saving money through the workforce assessment, although he did not have a specific dollar amount or number of jobs in mind for the cuts, in an interview.
Further explained that certain existing jobs might either be relocated or phased out.
Basically, the burger chain in January, declared that it will be reconsidering its corporate employment levels, as part of an updated business plan.
So, the review could result in layoffs in some areas, while other areas could experience expansion.
