According to data from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), major US companies such as Google, Amazon, Infosys, and IBM sponsored fewer H-1B visas in 2024. The H-1B visa, which is vital for international graduates and skilled foreign workers, permits employment in the US for up to six years. Indians make up the largest group of H-1B visa holders, but the latest data reflects a reduction in sponsorships by leading companies.
Top Tech Firms Cut H-1B Visa Sponsorships in 2024
Large tech companies and consulting firms have traditionally been the primary sponsors of H-1B visas, providing international talent with opportunities for employment and residency. However, in 2024, nearly all of the top 15 sponsoring companies reduced their H-1B visa approvals. Amazon, the largest sponsor, experienced a decline, dropping from over 11,000 approvals in 2023 to just over 7,000. Major Indian tech firms like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services also reported notable decreases. Similarly, other companies such as Google, Microsoft, Cognizant, and Deloitte saw reductions in their H-1B sponsorship numbers.
Meta Increases H-1B Sponsorships Amid Decline Across Other Firms
Meta stood out as an exception, increasing its H-1B sponsorships by approximately 400, likely driven by its emphasis on expanding virtual and augmented reality. Several factors could account for the overall decline in sponsorships. Immigration expert Ajay Sharma points to the global recession and the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as key influences reshaping business models. As a result, companies may no longer require as many workers for specific roles, particularly in departments impacted by the economic slowdown.
Political factors, such as the possibility of Donald Trump winning the US presidential election, could result in stricter H-1B regulations, further restricting opportunities for foreign workers. In 2023, Indians made up 72.3% of H-1B visa approvals, while China’s share was 11.7%. This reduction in approvals may increase competition for these highly sought-after visas.
