Taking a significant step toward more convenient and accessible EV charging, India has unveiled its first indigenously developed wireless Electric Vehicle (EV) charger.

Launch of First Mase In India EV Charger

It appears to be a big breakthrough for country’s electric mobility sector with a 1.5 kW charger can wirelessly replenish up to 90% of a 4.8 kWh battery in approximately three hours.

Further, it would be utilizing a standard 230V, 50Hz AC single-phase power supply.

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Thiruvananthapuram, and Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur has worked together to work on this innovative solution.

They have developed this solution under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s (MeitY) flagship National Mission on Power Electronics Technology (NaMPET).

It is designed to work with a standard 230V, 50Hz AC power supply, further delivering 1.5 kW of power through contactless transmission.

The solution has achieved a maximum efficiency of 89.4% even with a coil separation of up to 12.5 cm.

The charger employs Silicon Carbide-based MOSFETs operating at 88 kHz.

Besides this, It incorporates advanced safety features, including short-circuit and open-circuit protection, ensuring reliable and secure operation.

Scaling up EV Adoption Across Country

The development is lauded as a major milestone in India’s journey toward EV self-reliance by MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan.

Further adding, “Innovations like this will be instrumental in scaling up EV adoption across the country, especially when combined with Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat goals,”

They have licensed this technology to Global Business Solution Pvt. Ltd. for commercial production while signaling the start of its market journey.

When it comes to the electric vehicles, more than 4.5 million electric vehicles are already running on Indian roads.

With the introduction of a homegrown wireless charging option, it is expected to ease infrastructure challenges further offering users a more seamless experience.

This latest achievement appears to be a part of a wider thrust by MeitY to foster domestic R&D in power electronics.

Apart for this, they are also working on other projects including the indigenous propulsion systems for electric locomotives and energy-efficient low-voltage DC power distribution systems.

While applauding the collaboration between C-DAC and VNIT Nagpur for developing an indigenous wireless EV charger, Uday Narang, the Founder of Omega Seiki Pvt. Ltd. called it a “transformative milestone in India’s clean mobility journey.”

Further emphasizing that such innovations not only enhance user convenience by enabling cable-free charging—powering up to 90% in just 3 hours—but also reinforce the country’s ambition of becoming self-reliant in EV technology.
