Mahindra Expands Electric Commercial Vehicle Plans

Mahindra is expanding its electric vehicle ambitions beyond passenger cars and smaller commercial vehicles, with the company now beginning work on electric trucks.

At the same time, SML Mahindra is preparing to launch its first electric bus in FY27, marking a significant expansion of the group’s presence in electric commercial vehicles.

Electric Truck Development Begins

Mahindra has started the initial development work for electric trucks, although the programme is still at an early stage.

The company is taking a cautious approach and does not see electric trucks as an immediate priority. Its conventional internal-combustion-engine commercial vehicle business continues to offer substantial growth opportunities.

Mahindra’s strategy is to develop the required technology now and introduce electric trucks when market demand becomes strong enough to support them.

No Launch Timeline Yet

The company has not announced when its first electric truck will reach the market.

Mahindra executives have indicated that the timing will depend largely on how India’s electric commercial vehicle market develops.

This approach reflects the challenges facing electric trucks, including high upfront costs, battery requirements, charging infrastructure and the economics of commercial fleet operations.

For truck operators, vehicle utilisation and total operating costs are often more important than simply the purchase price.

First Mahindra Electric Bus In FY27

While electric trucks are still in the early development phase, the electric bus programme is considerably further ahead.

SML Mahindra is preparing to launch its first electric bus during FY27.

The company had previously showcased the Hiroi.ev electric bus and is now developing the production version for commercial deployment.

The launch will mark SML Mahindra’s entry into India’s growing electric bus market.

Why Electric Buses Come First

Electric buses currently offer a more predictable path towards electrification than heavy-duty trucks.

Buses often operate on fixed routes with predictable daily distances, making it easier to plan charging infrastructure.

Government procurement and large fleet tenders are also playing an important role in driving demand for electric buses in India.

Mahindra is therefore entering the segment while keeping its investments closely linked to commercial opportunities.

Electric Trucks Will Take Longer

The electrification of trucks presents a significantly larger technical challenge.

Heavy trucks require large amounts of energy to carry substantial loads over long distances. Larger batteries can increase vehicle weight, while charging infrastructure for high-capacity commercial vehicles remains limited.

For long-haul operations, charging time and range can also have a direct impact on fleet productivity.

As a result, Mahindra is developing the technology without committing to an immediate large-scale rollout.

Mahindra Already Has Strong EV Experience

Mahindra is not starting its commercial EV journey from scratch.

Its last-mile mobility business has already established a significant presence in electric commercial vehicles, particularly electric three-wheelers and small commercial vehicles.

The company has therefore accumulated experience in electric powertrains, batteries, vehicle software and commercial EV operations.

The next step is to transfer that experience into larger commercial vehicles.

India’s Commercial EV Market Is Changing

India’s electric vehicle market is expanding beyond passenger cars and two-wheelers.

Electric buses and commercial vehicles are increasingly becoming important parts of the country’s electrification strategy, particularly for urban transportation and last-mile logistics.

However, the transition in heavy commercial vehicles is expected to be slower because operators need strong financial returns before replacing established diesel fleets.

Mahindra’s Gradual EV Strategy

Mahindra’s latest plans indicate that the company is preparing for the future rather than rushing into every electric commercial vehicle segment simultaneously.

The electric bus will arrive first, while electric trucks remain under development.

If battery costs fall, charging infrastructure improves and fleet demand increases, Mahindra will already have the technology and engineering capabilities needed to accelerate its truck programme.

For now, the company’s approach is clear: build the technology first, and scale electric commercial vehicles when the market is ready.

Summary

Mahindra has begun initial development work on electric trucks while SML Mahindra prepares to launch its first electric bus in FY27. The company has not announced a timeline for its electric trucks and says their introduction will depend on market demand and commercial viability. The electric bus programme is further advanced, with SML Mahindra preparing to enter India’s growing e-bus segment. The gradual strategy reflects the challenges of electrifying larger commercial vehicles.
