When distant conflicts ripple through global supply lines, even the quiet flame in a household kitchen feels the tremor.

Crisis Pushes Maharashtra Toward PNG Expansion

In Mumbai, the Government of Maharashtra has taken swift action to counter disruptions in energy supply caused by the ongoing West Asia crisis. A Government Resolution (GR) issued by the Food and Civil Supplies Department has directed city gas distribution companies to activate 24/7 helplines and expand infrastructure for piped natural gas (PNG) connections across the state.

The move comes amid constraints in LPG availability, as global supply chain disruptions have impacted petroleum products. To address this, the government is pushing PNG as an immediate alternative. Companies have been instructed to ensure round-the-clock consumer support and increase the number of helplines and helpdesks in line with city populations and rising demand.

Additionally, CGD companies must expand ward-level centres to accept new applications and ensure both online and offline systems are widely accessible and well-publicised. The aim is to make the transition to PNG smoother and more efficient for households facing fuel supply challenges.

Streamlining Access and Strengthening Oversight

To accelerate adoption, the government has encouraged housing societies—both registered and proposed—as well as residents of completed buildings to submit collective or individual applications for PNG connections. This approach is expected to speed up pipeline expansion and last-mile connectivity.

The directive also calls for the establishment of information and assistance centres by municipal corporations, district supply officers, and CGD firms. To ensure accountability, companies must appoint district-level nodal officers responsible for monitoring progress.

“To monitor implementation, CGD companies must appoint district-level nodal officers and submit weekly progress reports on PNG pipeline expansion and connections, which will be consolidated and reviewed at the state level every Monday,” it said.

Regular district-level reviews will track implementation, while consolidated reports will be evaluated weekly at the state level. These measures will remain in place until the global geopolitical situation stabilises, ensuring that citizens face minimal disruption in accessing essential cooking fuel.

In uncertain times, resilience flows not just through pipelines, but through systems that keep everyday life steadily burning.

Summary

Amid global energy disruptions linked to the West Asia crisis, the Maharashtra government has directed city gas companies to expand PNG access, activate 24/7 helplines, and increase application centres. The move aims to counter LPG shortages by accelerating PNG adoption, supported by district-level monitoring, public outreach, and streamlined application systems until the situation stabilises.
