Early Childhood May Be A Sensitive Period

A new study has found that the timing of screen exposure during childhood may matter almost as much as the total amount of time children spend looking at screens.

Researchers who tracked children from infancy through middle childhood found that higher screen viewing, particularly around age 1 and age 6, was associated with poorer academic performance later and weaker working memory.

Study Followed Children For Several Years

Researchers from Inserm and the National University of Singapore analysed data from the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) birth cohort.

The study included 502 children, whose screen exposure was assessed at six different ages between infancy and childhood.

Researchers then compared their screen-use patterns with later academic performance and working-memory measurements.

The children were assessed at around age 9 for academic performance and age 10.5 for working memory.

Age 1 Showed The Strongest Association

The strongest association appeared at age 1.

Researchers said the effect sizes observed at this stage were the largest among the ages examined.

One possible explanation is that excessive screen exposure could displace activities that are particularly important during infancy, including interaction with parents, play and other forms of direct engagement.

However, the researchers’ findings show an association rather than proving that screen exposure directly causes poorer academic or cognitive outcomes.

The Link Appeared Again At Age 6

Interestingly, the relationship was not equally strong throughout childhood.

Screen viewing at ages 2 and 3 was not significantly associated with the later outcomes examined in the study.

But the association appeared again at age 6, around the time children enter formal schooling.

This period is important because children begin facing greater demands on attention, memory, learning and classroom participation.

More Screen Time Overall Also Mattered

The researchers also found that children who accumulated greater screen exposure across childhood tended to perform less well academically.

This suggests that parents may need to consider both how much screen time children receive and when that screen exposure occurs.

The researchers therefore argue that reducing excessive screen use could be particularly valuable during infancy and around the transition into formal education.

It Is Not Just About The Number Of Hours

The study does not suggest that every minute spent watching a screen will have the same effect.

Researchers point out that screen duration is only one part of the picture.

The type of content, the device being used and whether parents watch or interact with children during screen use could also influence developmental outcomes.

Future research will need to examine these factors more closely.

What Parents Should Take Away

The findings do not mean that parents need to eliminate every screen from a child’s life.

Instead, they reinforce the importance of limiting excessive screen exposure, particularly during periods when children are rapidly developing and learning.

For very young children, direct interaction, play and other real-world activities remain important parts of development.

As children approach school age, parents may also want to pay closer attention to how much screen use competes with sleep, physical activity, reading, homework and family interaction.

A Reminder About Screen Habits

The study adds another layer to the ongoing debate over children’s screen use.

Rather than treating screen time as a single number, the research suggests that age and developmental stage may be important factors.

The strongest associations were observed around ages 1 and 6, while ages 2 and 3 did not show the same significant relationship in this analysis.

That makes the findings more nuanced than a simple claim that all screen exposure is equally harmful.

The Bigger Message

As screens become increasingly embedded in children’s daily lives, understanding their long-term effects is becoming more important.

This study suggests that early childhood could contain specific periods when heavier screen exposure is more strongly associated with later learning and memory outcomes.

The researchers’ broader message is straightforward: less screen exposure is generally preferable for young children, particularly during infancy and around the beginning of formal schooling.
