Jio Platforms has created history in the global stock market by becoming the first initial public offering (IPO) to receive more than one crore applications. The record-breaking response to the company’s ₹30,213-crore public issue highlights the growing participation of Indian investors and the strong demand for major technology and digital businesses.

Jio IPO Becomes 1st IPO In The World To Receive 1 Crore Applications

The IPO closed on October 23, 2026, after attracting interest from retail investors, institutional buyers and existing shareholders of Reliance Industries.

Jio IPO Breaks Previous Global Record

Jio Platforms crossed the one-crore application milestone on the final day of bidding, surpassing the previous reported record of approximately 97.34 lakh applications received by Waaree Energies.

Other Indian IPOs, including Bajaj Housing Finance and Bharat Coking Coal, had also attracted exceptionally high numbers of applications. However, Jio Platforms became the first reported public issue globally to cross the 10-million-application threshold.

The milestone demonstrates the scale of India’s expanding investor base and the ability of large, well-known companies to attract participation from across the country.

₹30,213-Crore IPO Attracts Strong Demand

Jio Platforms’ IPO was priced between ₹1,065 and ₹1,119 per share. At the upper end of the price band, the offering values the company at approximately ₹10.3 lakh crore, or around $108 billion.

The issue comprises a fresh issue of 27 crore equity shares, with no offer-for-sale component. This means the company will receive the proceeds rather than existing shareholders selling their stakes through the offering.

Jio Platforms plans to use a substantial portion of the proceeds to repay borrowings at its wholly owned subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm. The remaining funds are intended to support capital expenditure, technology and digital services investments, and working capital requirements.

Institutional Investors Lead Subscription Demand

Institutional investors played a major role in the IPO’s strong performance. On the final day of bidding, the qualified institutional buyer category recorded demand far exceeding its allotted share of the issue. Non-institutional investors also demonstrated strong interest, while the retail portion received subscriptions of more than twice the shares reserved for it at an interim stage.

By the time the issue closed, reports indicated that the offering had attracted bids worth more than ₹4.5 lakh crore and over 1.25 crore applications.

These figures underline the unprecedented scale of investor participation, although the number of applications and the total value of bids measure different aspects of demand.

Beyond Telecom: Jio’s Technology Ambitions

Investor interest also reflects Jio Platforms’ broader ambitions beyond telecommunications. The company is expanding its focus on artificial intelligence, cloud services, enterprise technology and digital platforms.

Jio has built a large connectivity business and is seeking to use its technology infrastructure to develop additional consumer and enterprise services. Investors will be watching whether these initiatives can generate sustained growth and strengthen profitability over time.

What Happens Next?

The basis of allotment was expected to be finalised on October 26, with the shares scheduled to list on the BSE and NSE on October 28.

Despite the record application count, investors should remember that an IPO does not guarantee listing gains or long-term returns. The company’s future performance, valuation and ability to convert its technology investments into profits will remain important factors after listing.

Summary

Jio Platforms’ ₹30,213-crore IPO became the first reported public issue globally to receive more than one crore applications, setting a new record for investor participation. The offering attracted strong institutional and retail demand, with reported bids exceeding ₹4.5 lakh crore. The company plans to use much of the proceeds to repay subsidiary debt and fund technology investments. Shares are scheduled to list on October 28, 2026.
