Reliance Jio and US telecom operator T-Mobile have achieved what the companies describe as the world’s first 5G Standalone roaming connection, marking a significant development in international mobile connectivity.

The new arrangement allows customers of both operators to access 5G Standalone networks while travelling between India and the US, without relying on older network architecture for the roaming connection.
5G SA Roaming Between India And US
Under the new arrangement, T-Mobile customers travelling to India can access Jio’s 5G Standalone network.
Similarly, Jio customers travelling to the US can roam on T-Mobile’s 5G Standalone network.
This means travellers can maintain access to 5G SA connectivity across international borders, provided their devices, plans and network coverage support the service.
What Makes 5G Standalone Different
Unlike 5G Non-Standalone networks, which continue to rely partly on existing 4G LTE infrastructure, 5G Standalone uses a dedicated 5G core.
This architecture is designed to provide lower latency, faster connectivity and improved network reliability. It also creates a foundation for technologies such as network slicing, advanced IoT applications and real-time communications.
For international roaming, however, connecting two independent 5G SA networks requires significant technical integration.
Syniverse Enables The Connection
The interoperability between Jio and T-Mobile’s networks has been enabled through Syniverse’s connectivity platform.
The platform provides the network interconnection required for 5G SA roaming and supports the secure exchange of signalling and traffic between operators.
The technology is intended to help operators establish commercial 5G SA roaming without having to build completely separate connectivity arrangements for every international partner.
Voice And Data Capabilities
The achievement goes beyond simply providing 5G data connectivity.
The roaming arrangement supports 5G Standalone services for both data and voice, including Voice over New Radio, or VoNR.
Supporting voice over a 5G SA roaming connection is technically more complex than supporting data because voice services need to manage factors such as latency, mobility and handovers between networks.
Benefits For Travellers
For customers travelling between India and the US, the technology could make international connectivity more seamless.
Users can potentially benefit from faster speeds and lower latency while using applications such as video streaming, cloud services, business applications and real-time communication.
The technology could also become increasingly important for enterprise users and connected devices that need reliable connectivity across countries.
Jio’s 5G SA Network Advantage
Jio has built a nationwide 5G Standalone network in India, giving it a significant infrastructure base for international 5G SA roaming.
The company launched its 5G services using a standalone architecture, while continuing to expand its 5G network and customer base across the country.
The partnership with T-Mobile now extends that infrastructure into an international roaming ecosystem.
Could Open Door For More Operators
The Jio-T-Mobile connection could also provide a model for other telecom operators looking to establish 5G SA roaming partnerships.
As more operators deploy standalone 5G networks, interoperability between these networks will become increasingly important for international travellers and businesses.
T-Mobile has indicated that it is already looking at additional 5G SA roaming opportunities with other international operators.
Summary
Reliance Jio and T-Mobile have achieved what they describe as the world’s first 5G Standalone roaming connection. The service enables customers travelling between India and the US to access each operator’s 5G SA network. Enabled by Syniverse, the technology supports data and voice services, while potentially improving speed, latency and reliability for international travellers.
