ISRO Is Preparing For A Major Shift

India’s space programme is entering a major new phase, with ISRO gradually preparing to step away from the routine manufacturing of launch vehicles and satellites.

Instead, private companies and public-sector organisations will increasingly take responsibility for building rockets, while ISRO focuses on research, advanced technologies, scientific missions and specialised infrastructure.

The change is part of India’s broader effort to expand its commercial space industry and create a much larger private-sector ecosystem.

ISRO Will Eventually Stop Manufacturing Launch Vehicles

Pawan Goenka, chairman of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), said the long-term plan is for ISRO to stop manufacturing launch vehicles altogether.

Under the proposed model, rocket production will increasingly be carried out by private companies or public-sector undertakings.

This does not mean ISRO will stop developing rockets or conducting launches.

Instead, the organisation’s role will increasingly shift towards developing new technologies and transferring mature technologies to industry for commercial production.

SSLV Has Already Started The Transition

The first major example of this transition is the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV).

Its technology and production rights have already been transferred to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) following a competitive bidding process.
