Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 594-km-long Ganga Expressway, marking a major milestone in India’s infrastructure growth. The expressway connects Meerut to Prayagraj, making it the longest access-controlled expressway in Uttar Pradesh and one of the largest greenfield highway projects in the country.
Built at an estimated cost of ₹36,230 crore, the project is designed as a six-lane highway, expandable to eight lanes in the future.
Travel Time Slashed to Just 6 Hours
One of the biggest benefits of the Ganga Expressway is the drastic reduction in travel time. The journey between Meerut and Prayagraj, which earlier took 10–12 hours, can now be completed in around 6–8 hours.
With a design speed of up to 120 km/h, the expressway ensures faster, smoother, and more efficient travel across western, central, and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Connecting 12 Districts, Unlocking Growth
The expressway passes through 12 districts, linking key economic regions of the state. This improved connectivity is expected to boost trade, logistics, and regional mobility.
More importantly, the project is not just about transportation—it is being positioned as a development corridor, connecting urban centers with underdeveloped regions and opening new opportunities for industrial growth.
Industrial Corridor & Job Creation Boost
The government plans to develop 12 industrial and logistics clusters along the expressway, with proposed investments of nearly ₹47,000 crore.
These developments could generate significant employment, with estimates suggesting lakhs of job opportunities across sectors like manufacturing, warehousing, and agro-processing.
This makes the expressway a critical driver of economic transformation, not just a road project.
Modern Features & Strategic Importance
The Ganga Expressway is equipped with modern infrastructure, including:
- Emergency airstrip for fighter aircraft landings
- EV charging stations
- Trauma centers and rest areas
It is designed as a future-ready corridor, combining transportation, defense utility, and sustainability.

The expressway is expected to reshape Uttar Pradesh’s economic landscape by improving connectivity, reducing logistics costs, and attracting investments.
With plans to extend the corridor further toward Haridwar, the project could become a key national highway link connecting major religious, economic, and industrial hubs.
