Indian Railways has introduced a new online personal luggage booking facility for passengers travelling with confirmed reserved tickets, making it easier to carry excess baggage on trains. Starting July 31, passengers can book and pay for excess luggage while reserving their tickets online, eliminating the need to visit parcel offices separately.
The move is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to digitise passenger services and simplify the travel experience.
Who Can Use The New Facility?
The online luggage booking service is available only to passengers holding confirmed reserved train tickets.
Passengers can book excess personal luggage online within the maximum weight limits prescribed for their travel class. The facility has been integrated into the online reservation system, allowing travellers to complete both ticket and luggage bookings in a single process.
No Change In Free Luggage Allowance
Indian Railways has clarified that the existing free luggage allowance and maximum permissible luggage limits remain unchanged.
For classes such as AC 3-Tier, AC Chair Car and Second Class, passengers can continue carrying luggage within the prescribed free limits without paying additional charges. Only baggage exceeding the free allowance will attract luggage booking charges.
The facility will not be available for travel classes where the free allowance and maximum permissible luggage limit are the same.
What Information Will Passengers Receive?
During the online booking process, passengers will be shown important details, including:
- Class-wise free luggage allowance
- Maximum permissible luggage weight
- List of restricted and prohibited items
- Applicable charges and penalties for carrying excess luggage
This is expected to help travellers understand the rules before beginning their journey.

Until now, passengers carrying excess baggage had to visit railway parcel offices separately to complete luggage booking formalities.
