Due in large part to tighter security at the Mexico border, the northern US border with Canada has seen twice as many unauthorized Indian crossings as the southwestern border.

Illegal Indian Immigrants Into US Double From Canadian Borders

The UK has suggested requiring transit visas for Indian nationals traveling to Canada in reaction to the surge in asylum claims from these individuals, many of whom are in transit.

In an effort to reduce the number of unauthorized migrants entering the US, the US has pushed Canada to strengthen its visa screening procedures.

Asylum claims from Indian nationals have also increased significantly in Canada; 6,056 claims were lodged in the first quarter of 2024, following a trend that started in 2017.

Some of the unexpected repercussions of Canada’s lenient immigration regulations, which were first implemented to attract international students, can be attributed to the country’s increased asylum petitions.

The US formed the Northern Border Security Caucus in reaction to the spike in crossings in order to handle issues related to drug and people trafficking.

The United Kingdom’s policy of excluding Indian nationals traveling to Canada from requiring transit visas has played a major role in the surge of asylum petitions, which increased elevenfold between 2018 and 2023.

The predicament draws attention to the intricate difficulties in controlling immigration and emphasizes the necessity for closer international cooperation to close gaps in visa and transit regulations that illegal immigrants take advantage of.
