India’s hybrid passenger vehicle market witnessed a slight slowdown in June 2026, with total sales falling 8.1% month-on-month to 8,322 units from 9,056 units in May. Despite the overall decline, the segment continues to attract buyers seeking improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions without depending entirely on charging infrastructure.

The sales figures indicate that while demand remains healthy, individual model performance varied significantly, with some vehicles recording strong growth despite the broader market contraction.

Toyota Hyryder Emerges As Best-Selling Hybrid

Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder retained its leadership in the hybrid segment by recording sales of 3,550 units during June. The SUV registered healthy month-on-month growth and accounted for nearly 43% of the country’s total hybrid vehicle sales, underlining its popularity among Indian buyers.

Toyota Innova Hycross secured the second position with 2,702 units. However, the premium MPV witnessed a notable decline compared to the previous month, contributing to the overall reduction in hybrid sales.

Maruti Suzuki Records Positive Growth

Maruti Suzuki’s hybrid portfolio delivered encouraging performance during the month. The Grand Vitara posted steady growth, while the newly introduced Victoris emerged as one of the fastest-growing hybrid models, registering a sharp month-on-month increase in sales.

The positive performance demonstrates that demand for hybrid SUVs continues to remain strong, particularly among customers looking for fuel-efficient alternatives to conventional petrol vehicles.

Premium Hybrid Models Witness Mixed Performance

Honda City e:HEV and Toyota Vellfire also remained part of India’s hybrid vehicle market during June. Both models recorded lower sales compared to May, reflecting softer demand in their respective premium segments.

Despite these declines, premium hybrid vehicles continue to appeal to buyers seeking advanced technology, improved fuel economy, and lower running costs.

Hybrid Segment Continues To Evolve

Although June witnessed a temporary dip in overall sales, the hybrid vehicle segment remains an important part of India’s transition towards cleaner mobility. Rising fuel prices, stricter emission norms, and growing consumer awareness are expected to support long-term demand for hybrid technology alongside electric vehicles.

Automakers are likely to expand their hybrid offerings further as buyers increasingly seek practical alternatives that combine efficiency with convenience.

Summary

India’s hybrid car sales declined 8.1% month-on-month to 8,322 units in June 2026, led by the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. While Toyota Innova Hycross and some premium models reported lower sales, Maruti Suzuki’s hybrid lineup recorded healthy growth. The segment continues to play an important role in India’s evolving clean mobility landscape and fuel-efficient vehicle market.
