With the massive general elections is just around the corner for India and the world’s largest democracy prepares for this unparalleled democratic activity which shall be conducted in seven phases from 19 April 2024 to 1 June 2024 for 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha.
Voters have been asked to exercise their fundamental right in order to elect the representative of 1.44 billion. To exercise this fundamental right, one needs to have a Voter ID, which is aka EPIC (Election Photo Identity Card).
Issued by Election Commission of India (ECI), Voter ID is a photo identity card which is given to all Indian citizens eligible to vote to ensure as a means of identification during elections to ensure fairness and prevent fraudulent activities.
Specific information such as unique serial number, a photograph, holographic symbols representing the respective state or nation, name, father’s name, gender, and date of birth of the cardholder are mentioned in the Voter ID. On the backside, details like the residential address as well as the signature of the issuing authority are featured.
How to Obtain Voter ID?
Individuals can apply either of the ways for the same – online, offline, or semi-online methods.
The online process entails registration on the National Voters’ Service Portal (NVSP) wherein Form 6 can be filled out, followed by upload of necessary documents and application submission to the end.
The semi online entails downloading Form 6 from the NVSP and filling it out later, along with submitting it along with documents at an Election Office.
The offline method on the other end requires one to visit the State Election Office, obtain the Form 6, fill it and submit it with the supporting documents.
Voter ID Issuance and Participation
The accuracy should be utmost when it comes to the provided information and submitted documents.
The status of the Voter ID issuance can be tracked through the NVSP website using the reference ID provided during application submission or else one can do so by visiting the State Election Office.
Not just voting, the Voter ID is multipurpose and can also be used as proof of identity and address, acknowledgment of voter registration, and eligibility for government schemes.
Even after the submission of correct information as well as documents, on case of non-receipt of the Voter ID, one can follow up through the NVSP portal or visit the state election office for resolution.
Notably, not just Indians in India but across the globe can participate in the electoral festival if they are present in India. The Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) can apply for a Voter ID online or offline and cast their votes. There is no remote voting and the voter should be present in his respective constituency.
