Commuters using Pune’s upcoming Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 may have to pay more than passengers on the existing Pune Metro network. The proposed fare for a journey longer than 18 km is ₹62, compared with the current maximum fare of ₹35 on Pune Metro.

The new corridor is being developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Its fares have been set according to the concession agreement signed with the project’s operator.

Proposed Fare Slabs

Under the proposed structure, passengers will pay ₹12 for journeys of up to 2 km, ₹25 for 2–4 km, ₹37 for 4–8 km, ₹43 for 8–12 km and ₹49 for 12–18 km. Trips exceeding 18 km will cost ₹62.

The fare structure includes a base fare of ₹10 for the first 2 km, with the amount rounded to ₹12 for collection. Fares for the other distance bands have also been rounded to the nearest rupee.

Why Line 3 May Cost More

The existing Pune Metro is a government-funded project, while Line 3 is being developed through a PPP arrangement. Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari said the fare structure was determined by the concession agreement.

He added that the fares were not high compared with other Metro projects developed under the PPP model.

Fare Review After Six Months

Anilkumar Saini, chief executive officer of IT City Metro Rail Limited, said the fare structure would be reviewed after six months, when a decision could be taken on any changes.

The operator expects the corridor to carry between 2 lakh and 2.5 lakh passengers daily. The review could offer an opportunity to assess whether the proposed fares are appropriate once ridership patterns become clearer.

What It Means for Commuters

The proposed rates would make longer journeys on Line 3 costlier than comparable trips on the existing network. The final impact on commuters will depend on their travel distance, frequency of use and whether fares are revised after the initial operating period.

The corridor is expected to improve connectivity between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar, but affordability will remain an important consideration as commuters weigh the new service against other transport options.
