The Maharashtra government has approved a massive ₹70,000 crore coal gasification and downstream chemicals project proposed by the Adani Group in Nagpur district, making it one of the largest industrial investments cleared by the state in recent years. The project was approved by a cabinet sub-committee on industries chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis as part of a broader package of high-technology investments worth nearly ₹90,000 crore.

The approval is being viewed as a significant boost for Maharashtra’s manufacturing sector, particularly the Vidarbha region, which is emerging as a major hub for energy, chemicals, logistics, and advanced industrial projects.
What Is The Project About?
The Adani Group plans to establish an integrated coal gasification and downstream derivatives complex at Linga near Kalmeshwar in Nagpur district. The project will convert coal into synthesis gas (syngas), which can then be used to manufacture chemicals, fertilizers, hydrogen, ammonia, and other industrial products.
Coal gasification is increasingly being promoted by the Indian government as a way to reduce dependence on imported natural gas, crude oil, and chemical feedstocks. Unlike traditional coal-based power generation, gasification converts coal into a cleaner gaseous fuel that can be used across multiple industries.
Massive Investment And Job Creation
According to company officials and government sources, the first phase of the project alone involves an investment of ₹70,000 crore. The project is expected to create between 10,000 and 30,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, making it one of the largest job-generating industrial projects planned in the region.
Reports also suggest that a second phase with a similar scale of investment could be considered in the future, potentially taking the total investment well beyond ₹1 lakh crore over time.
Why Nagpur And Vidarbha?
The project is part of a larger effort to transform Vidarbha into an industrial and energy hub. The region offers several advantages, including abundant coal resources, strong road and rail connectivity, proximity to mining operations, and access to industrial infrastructure through MIDC and MIHAN.
The Maharashtra government has also approved land allocation and is facilitating infrastructure support for coal gasification projects in the area. Around 290-400 acres of land near Kalmeshwar have been identified for such developments.
Strategic Importance For India
The project aligns with the Centre’s push to promote coal gasification as part of India’s energy security strategy. The government has already introduced viability gap funding and incentives to encourage coal-to-chemical projects across the country.
If completed successfully, the facility could help reduce imports of critical industrial chemicals and feedstocks while supporting domestic manufacturing and the development of hydrogen-related technologies.
Summary
Maharashtra has approved the Adani Group’s ₹70,000 crore coal gasification and downstream chemicals project near Nagpur, one of the state’s largest industrial investments. The project aims to convert coal into syngas, hydrogen, ammonia, and other industrial products while creating thousands of jobs in Vidarbha. The initiative aligns with India’s broader strategy to boost energy security, reduce import dependence, and develop advanced manufacturing capabilities.
