The Central Government has acknowledged that E20 petrol may reduce fuel efficiency by up to 5% in some vehicles but maintains that the benefits of ethanol-blended fuel outweigh the slight drop in mileage. Officials say the transition to E20 is a crucial step towards reducing India’s dependence on imported crude oil, lowering emissions, and strengthening the country’s energy security.

The clarification comes as motorists continue to raise concerns about the impact of E20 fuel on vehicle performance and operating costs.

Why E20 Petrol May Affect Mileage

E20 fuel is a blend containing 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. Since ethanol contains less energy than conventional petrol, vehicles may experience a slight reduction in fuel economy. According to the government, the mileage loss is expected to be up to 5% in compatible vehicles.

However, officials emphasise that the reduction varies depending on the vehicle model, engine design, driving habits, and maintenance condition.

Cleaner Combustion And Lower Emissions

One of the biggest advantages of E20 petrol is cleaner combustion. Ethanol burns more efficiently than conventional petrol, helping reduce harmful tailpipe emissions and contributing to improved air quality.

The government believes wider adoption of ethanol-blended fuel will support India’s environmental goals while reducing the transport sector’s carbon footprint.

Boosting India’s Energy Security

Reducing dependence on imported crude oil remains one of the primary objectives behind the E20 programme. By increasing the use of domestically produced ethanol, India can lower its fuel import bill, improve energy security, and reduce exposure to fluctuations in global oil prices.

The initiative also supports domestic ethanol production, creating additional demand for agricultural feedstock and strengthening the rural economy.

What Vehicle Owners Should Know

Most newer vehicles manufactured for E20 compatibility can safely use the fuel without requiring modifications. Owners of older vehicles are advised to check their manufacturer’s recommendations regarding fuel compatibility and maintenance.

The government has reiterated that E20 has undergone extensive testing and is suitable for approved vehicles when used as recommended.

Looking Ahead

India’s transition to E20 petrol is part of a broader strategy to promote cleaner fuels and build a more sustainable energy future. While some motorists may notice a slight reduction in mileage, the government believes the long-term gains—including lower emissions, reduced oil imports, and improved energy security—will outweigh the short-term impact on fuel efficiency.

Summary

The government has stated that E20 petrol may reduce vehicle mileage by up to 5% because ethanol contains less energy than conventional petrol. Despite the slight drop in fuel efficiency, officials say the blend offers cleaner combustion, lower emissions, reduced dependence on imported crude oil, and stronger long-term energy security for India.
